Charles Point Wide - artificial reef modules

The Department of Logistics and Infrastructure (DLI) is undertaking works to design, construct and deploy artificial reef modules within the Charles Point Wide Reef Fish Protection Area (RFPA). DLI is delivering these works on behalf of the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries to support the recovery of at‑risk reef fish, notably golden snapper.

Charles Point RFPA was selected following desktop bathymetric assessments and its alignment with long‑term reef fish protection objectives. The new artificial reef network will increase marine habitat, support golden snapper recovery and enhance reef species sustainability.

The scope of works includes:

• artificial reef design – development of module designs suitable for long-term marine habitat enhancement
• module construction – fabrication of reef modules at East Arm
• deployment activities – transport by barge and installation at Charles Point

Survey and design works will commence in August 2026, with overall project completion anticipated by March 2027, subject to weather and marine operating conditions.

The artificial reef modules will be designed to create shade, promote upwelling and incorporate multiple voids of varying sizes. These features provide varied habitat for diverse species to maximise outcomes and support the long‑term sustainability of key fishery resources.
