Jim McConville Oval lighting towers
The Northern Territory Government, together with the Alice Springs Town Council is building 4 permanent lighting towers at Jim McConville Oval in Gillen, Alice Springs.
Lighting of the oval will maximise use and allow sporting codes and licenced user groups access to a well-lit safe outdoor greenspace. This will allow extended training and competition in Alice Springs during the shorter winter days whilst giving access to cooler nights during the summer months.
Permanent lighting will offer the versatility of year-round use, allowing codes such as cricket and AFL opportunities to attract national and international competitions.
Other benefits of lighting Jim McConville Oval include increased participation, additional use by multiple sports and user groups, and better viewing and safer conditions for players and spectators.
The Department of Logistics and Infrastructure (DLI) will deliver construction in 2 stages.
- Stage 1 early works, manufacturing of lighting towers, commencing in January 2025.
- Stage 2 construction works package commencing in February 2025. Works are expected to be completed in June 2025.
Jim McConville Oval will remain open for public access throughout construction. Users are asked to take care when accessing the oval and remain clear of any designated works areas.
