Kulaluk flood mitigation works

The Department of Logistics and Infrastructure (DLI) is conducting works at Kulaluk town camp in Coconut Grove to upgrade the stormwater drainage system.

The upgrade project is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Northern Territory Government through the National Flood Mitigation Infrastructure Program.

The works will create an underground stormwater system which will alleviate localised flooding, water ponding and associated biting insect issues.

The works include:

• new underground stormwater drainage
• upgraded access road and associated infrastructure.

The stormwater system will be constructed in a 12-metre-wide easement and will follow the eastern and southern boundaries of Kulaluk town camp. The underground drainage system has been designed to accommodate stormwater flows from the surrounding Coconut Grove catchment during storm events up to and including a large storm event equivalent to a 1 in 100 year event.

The underground system will be set back around 7.5 metres from each boundary to the centre of the system and sit approximately 2 metres deep from the final finish.

This design ensures adequate capacity to manage major rainfall events and minimise the risk of localised flooding.

The cleared easement along the southern boundary of the Kulaluk town camp, will also serve as a firebreak as required by law.

Project update

Works are currently due for completion by early September 2026, weather dependent.

As at March 2026, project progress includes:

• trunk drain 60% complete
• 300 metres of pipes and culverts laid
• 90 metres of ancillary pipes laid – 185 metres total
• 7 pre-cast standard pits laid – 14 pits total
• 7 in-situ concrete pits poured - 10 pits total
• 195 metres of underground electrical conduit installed - 379 metres total
• 2 large in-situ electrical cable pits poured, 2 small in-situ electrical cable pits remaining
• 200 metres of communication conduit installed – 245 metres total.
