Light vehicle inspection changes
The Department of Logistics and Infrastructure is making some changes to the light vehicle inspection regime.
What is changing
From 9 February 2026, light vehicles (up to and including 4.5 tonne GVM) will only need roadworthy inspections if 7 years and older and when:
- transferring ownership (can be completed by seller or buyer)
- re-establishing registration after a vehicle has not been registered in the NT for more than 12 months
- first registration in the NT (prior to compliance inspection for interstate transfers).
There will be no changes to box or boat trailers 750 kg or less which do not require periodic roadworthy inspections, or to current inspection requirements for heavy vehicles or commercial passenger vehicles.
There will be no changes to modified vehicle inspection requirements.
A roadworthy inspection for a light vehicle is valid for 6 weeks from the date it is issued.
The vehicle can change ownership multiple times within those 6 weeks. You do not need a new roadworthy inspection during that period.

If your vehicle gets a defect notice, it must be repaired and have a full roadworthy inspection by a NT Government Transport Inspector.
