NT digital driver licence

The Northern Territory Government is developing a secure digital driver licence for Territorians.

The NT digital driver licence will be a digital version of the existing physical licence, giving eligible NT licence holders a simple and convenient way to show their licence on their smartphone.

It’s expected to be available by late 2026.

You can choose to use the NT digital driver licence - the physical licence card is also here to stay.

It will provide a simple, convenient way to prove who you are without carrying your wallet. It will be accepted in some places where you would normally show your licence.

Licence requirements

You will be able to get a NT digital driver licence if you hold a:

  • learner or provisional licence
  • motorcycle licence
  • heavy vehicle licence.

Digital evidence of age cards will be introduced at a later stage.

Access requirements

To access the NT digital driver licence, you’ll need to:

  • have a compatible smartphone
  • be able to verify your identity online.

Your physical driver licence card will still be available if you can’t or don’t want to use a digital driver licence.

Using your digital driver licence

You will be able to use your NT digital driver licence to:

  • prove your authority to drive
  • show you’re over 18
  • verify your identity in some situations.

You can also use your digital driver licence while waiting for a replacement physical card.

Accepted locations

You will be able to use your NT digital driver licence anywhere it is accepted as a valid form of identification.

Some businesses may need time to get ready to check digital licences. In the early stages, carry your physical licence card as a backup.

If you are travelling interstate or overseas, it is recommended you carry your physical licence.

Benefits

  • Convenience: show your licence from your phone at any time.
  • Real-time updates: keeps your licence information current. For example, you no longer have to wait for a new physical card to be posted when you renew your licence or you change your details.
  • Enhanced security: protects your information with built-in security features, as well as the security tools on your phone.
  • Improves privacy: you control the level of personal information you share based on whether police or businesses ask to:
    • check your full driver licence
    • confirm your address
    • check you're over 18.
  • Works offline: access it without data coverage.
  • Choice: it’s your choice to go digital and it’s available at no cost.

Addressing security concerns

It is being built using internationally recognised standards, with strong security features designed to protect personal information and reduce fraud.

Application process

More information will be provided later this year about how to get a NT digital driver licence.
