Tanami Road upgrades

The Northern Territory Government is investing in outback roads, by upgrading and sealing the Tanami Road, a jointly funded project with the Australian Government.

The Tanami Road is a 1,014 km direct link from Alice Springs to Halls Creek in Western Australia. The road is a vital inter-regional link which services many Aboriginal communities and is a key tourism and pastoral, mining and freight route.

Progressive upgrades to the Tanami Road will ultimately upgrade unsealed road pavement to a sealed standard dual lane road.

Current Status

Staged upgrades include:

  • 150 km dual lane seal completed
  • 21 km single lane seal requiring widening to a dual lane seal - currently underway
  • 34 km dual lane seal in final design stage
  • drainage and road safety improvements
  • 809 km of road upgrades in planning stage.

These works are part of the Tanami Road – NT Corridor upgrades under the Australian Governments Infrastructure Investment Program, which will enhance safety, reduce travel times, lower freight costs and support economic opportunities across the Northern Territory.

Remote NT residents will benefit from improved flood immunity and connectivity to essential services unavailable locally.
