Key actions

The strategy and implementation plan includes a range of actions over the next 5 years.

This includes:

  • reduced registration and stamp duty fees for EVs
  • the EV Charger Grant Scheme
  • facilitating the installation of more EV charging stations
  • supporting local innovation in EV technology
  • skills development for EV servicing and EV charging infrastructure installation
  • promoting information on EV charging locations
  • increasing the number of EVs in the NT Government fleet.

For more information, go to the NT Government website.

Registration and stamp duty

From 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2027, the NT Government will waive:

  • stamp duty fees for the sale of plug-in EVs up to $50,000 - providing a saving of up to $1,500
  • the registration fee when you register your EV - providing an annual $91 saving:
    • Motor Accidents Compensation and third party insurance still applies.

To find out more, go to the NT Government website.

Electric Vehicle Charger Grants Scheme

The Electric Vehicle Charger (Residential and Business) Grants Scheme is available to owners of EVs to buy and install EV chargers.

Proof of a NT registered EV is required.

Read more about the EV Charger Grants Scheme on the NT Government website.

EV number plates

In line with other jurisdictions in Australia, in March 2023, the NT Government introduced a requirement for labelling to be attached to the number plate of electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles built on or after 1 January 2019.

In an emergency, the labels help emergency responders quickly identify the vehicle's power source, so they can respond appropriately.
