National Asbestos Awareness Week - Think Twice about Asbestos
November 20-26 is National Asbestos Awareness Week and marks 20 years since the national ban of asbestos in Australia.
This year’s theme is: Think Twice about Asbestos.
Asbestos was used in a wide range of building materials prior to being phased out by 1990 and banned in December 2003.
Asbestos still exists in millions of buildings and structures across Australia. It is estimated that around 6 million tonnes of asbestos materials remain in our built environment, and that asbestos is in 1 in 3 homes.
At greatest risk are those who undertake asbestos removal or carry out repairs, maintenance or renovation work on buildings that were built before 1990.
This National Asbestos Awareness Week is an opportunity to remind everyone to ‘Think Twice about Asbestos’ when planning any renovations, repairs or other work on buildings that may contain asbestos.
