Consent to Use a Temporarily Closed or Restricted Road
The Department of Logistics and Infrastructure has replaced the manual application for ‘Consent to Use a Temporarily Restricted or Closed Road’ (formerly ‘Special Consent’) with an online portal process.
You can now submit Consent to Use a Temporarily Restricted or Closed Road applications through our online portal, accessible via Road Report NT, under the ‘Road Consent Application’ navigation link.
The new online portal offers several benefits, including:
- Real-time updates on the progress and outcome of applications
- Account creation for users, allowing storage of vehicle and contact details to streamline future applications
- Accessibility from both computer and mobile devices for user convenience.
Temporary closures and restrictions to the use of roads are legislated to protect the safety of road users and prevent damage to road assets.
It is an offence under Sections 11 (5) (6) of the Control of Roads Act to drive on a temporarily closed or restricted road and penalties to a maximum of 100 units apply.
A Consent to travel on a temporarily closed or restricted road may be considered by the Department of Logistics and Infrastructure as the competent authority in the follow circumstances;
- Businesses providing critical goods such as food and fuel or disposing of waste material likely to be a health hazard.
- Public servants providing essential support services.
- Service authorities restoring power, water or communications.
- Residents of communities leaving or returning to communities to collect essential supplies, access essential services or reunite with close relations for support.
