Think Twice about Asbestos

Published

National Asbestos Awareness Week (NAAW) 2024 is being held from 25 November to 1 December. This year’s theme is Think Twice about Asbestos.

Asbestos was used in a wide range of building materials prior to being phased out by 1990 and banned in December 2003. An estimated 4,000 Australians die annually from asbestos-related diseases.

With asbestos having been used in over 3,000 building products, it can show up inside and outside, in floors, walls, ceilings, eaves, pipes and roofs. It is still present in some homes and public and commercial buildings today.

It is a timely reminder during National Asbestos Awareness Week for homeowners to engage asbestos professionals to test for asbestos before starting any renovation or DIY project.

To prevent exposure and eliminate asbestos-related diseases in Australia, all asbestos waste must be properly disposed of at a licensed facility. Facilities are located in Alice Springs, Darwin, Katherine and Nhulunbuy.

Hear from Asbestos Removalist Garry Bell, and Asbestos Assessor Flynn Mackley about asbestos in the NT.
