Borroloola sports and cyclone shelter officially complete
The Borroloola community has a new multi-purpose facility with the completion of the $11.7 million Borroloola sports and Cyclone Shelter.
Designed to support both emergency response and community activity, the facility can accommodate up to 600 people during cyclones and other emergencies. Outside of emergency use, it functions as a venue for local sports, events, markets, and gatherings.
Funding for the project was made possible through a collaborative effort, including:
- $9.8M from the Northern Territory Government through a grant to the Roper Gulf Regional Council
- $1.5M from the McArthur River Mine Community Benefits Trust
- $400k from the Roper Gulf Regional Council ($400K)
Owned and operated by Roper Gulf Regional Council, the facility features indoor sporting courts, modern amenities, and flexible community space.
The shelter significantly enhances regional resilience and provides a safe, functional hub for the Borroloola community year-round.
