National Rail Safety Week

Published

This National Rail Safety Week, Territorians are urged to drive like our lives are worth living, particularly when passing over rail level crossings.

National Rail Safety Week runs from 11 to 17 August 2025.

The Department of Logistics and Infrastructure has developed safety messaging around level crossings in an effort to improve safety and reduce fatalities, near misses and collisions at level crossings.

The NT contains over 1,600 km of rail line. This includes 211 level crossings of which 51 are on public roads, with the remaining located on private roads/tracks or within pastoral leases.

Level crossings are the most common cause of fatalities on the national rail network.

It’s hard to judge the speed and distance of a train as it’s approaching and they have right of way at level crossings.

Stop, look and listen before you cross a rail level crossing.

Drive like our lives are worth living.

Respect the sign. Lives are on the line.
