Advancing corrections infrastructure in Alice Springs

Published

The Department of Logistics and Infrastructure is delivering critical corrections infrastructure in Alice Springs, with the first stage of the new dedicated Alice Springs Women’s Correctional Centre now complete.

The 95-bed facility has been designed to:

  • provide a purpose-built environment for women in custody
  • improve safety for staff and prisoners
  • support better rehabilitation outcomes and efficient operations.

For the first time in Alice Springs, women in custody are being accommodated in a dedicated facility separate from male prisoners.

The centre will accommodate both sentenced and remand prisoners and includes spaces for women-specific programs, education, training and case management.

Project progress

  • Stage one is now operational, with 38 beds open.
  • Additional capacity will come online this month.
  • Stage 2 will deliver a further 12 low and open-security beds. These beds will open once young people are transferred to the new youth intake and transfer facility, exected by the end of April 2026.

The $10.35 million project forms part of the broader Corrections Infrastructure Master Plan being delivered across the NT.
