Changes to abandoned vehicle rules
Abandoned vehicle rules have changed in the Northern Territory.
From 21 January, powers to remove abandoned vehicles in the NT have been strengthened.
Key changes include:
- shorter timeframes for registered vehicles left in non-time-limited parking areas
- expanded coverage for unregistered vehicles in public places
- clearer powers for authorised officers to move vehicles causing danger or obstruction.
The updates now allow abandoned and problem vehicles to be removed more quickly from roads, footpaths and public places, improving safety, access and amenity.
If you are planning to leave a vehicle in a public place or want to know how to report an abandoned vehicle, go to the Department of Logistics and Infrastructure website.
