Rail Safety Week
This Rail Safety Week, Territorians are urged to drive like our lives are worth living, particularly when passing over rail level crossings.
Rail Safety Week runs from 10 to 16 August 2026.
Level crossings are the most common cause of fatalities on the national rail network.
The NT contains over 1,600 km of rail line. This includes 211 level crossings, of which 51 are on public roads, with the remainder located on private roads, tracks or within pastoral leases.
It’s hard to judge the speed and distance of a train as it approaches, and trains have right of way at level crossings.
Rail accidents have devastating and lasting effects on those involved and their families.
Stop, look and listen before you cross a rail level crossing.
Don't risk the rails.
