Stronger penalties for drink or drug driving

Published

The Northern Territory Government remains committed to improving road safety across the Territory.

From 29 May, demerit point penalties for drink and drug driving offences will increase to 6 points.

This measure is designed to deter repeat offenders and promote greater driver responsibility, contributing to safer roads for all Territorians.

Road trauma continues to have a devastating impact on our community. NT drivers are 4 times more likely to die on the road than the national average.

On average, 42 people are killed and approximately 410 people are seriously injured on Territory roads each year. Seven people have already tragically lost their lives.

We urge all road users to drive like our lives are worth living.
