Maningrida barge landing upgrades

The Department of Logistics and Infrastructure (the department) is reviewing drainage and safety at the Maningrida barge landing.

Maningrida is a major service centre for approximately 2,500 people as well as more than 30 outstations or homelands. The Maningrida barge landing is a vital piece of infrastructure to provide supplies to the Maningrida community and the surrounding area. Safety and drainage improvements are needed to improve operational use of the barge landing.

Drainage and safety issues

The hardstand surface of the Maningrida barge landing has been damaged from drainage issues at the site. The surface water from connecting roads flows along the barge landing access road and across the hardstand. This has scoured the surface of the hardstand, increasing the safety risk for operation of freight handling equipment.

Upgraded signage is also needed to improve safety at the barge landing.

Scope of works

The department has engaged Fyfe Engineering to complete a detailed design to:

  • upgrade drainage to mitigate the issue of scouring on the barge landing hardstand
  • reduce surface drainage movement across the hardstand
  • improve safety signage.

Preliminary design

A preliminary design has been prepared, which includes:

  • construction of an open stormwater drain on the eastern side of the barge landing
  • construction of a concrete driveway across the new stormwater drain to Lot 658 (Aged Care Centre)
  • rip and recompact existing gravel pavement across the barge landing
  • installation of new safety signage to draw attention to hazards at the barge landing.

The gravel pavement and stormwater drain will address historical drainage issues and ensure the barge landing is not damaged during storms.
