Changes to light vehicle inspections

Published

The Department of Logistics and Infrastructure is making some changes to light vehicle inspections.

From 9 February 2026, light vehicles (up to and including 4.5 tonne GVM) will only need roadworthy inspections if 7 years and older and when:

  • transferring ownership (can be completed by seller or buyer)
  • re-establishing registration after a vehicle has not been registered in the NT for more than 12 months
  • first registration in the Northern Territory (prior to compliance inspection for interstate transfers).

There will be no changes to box or boat trailers 750 kg or less which do not require periodic roadworthy inspections, or to current inspection requirements for heavy vehicles or Commercial Passenger Vehicles.
